Global Industries Uncovered series

The Tourism Industry and The Fashion Industry

The Global Industries Uncovered series takes a look at the impacts of some of the world's biggest industries.  By investigating the interdependences between people, places and the environment, it shows how every one of us is affected by the concept of globalisation.

The Tourism Industry considers what one person's holiday means to the world.  How many industries are connected to tourism?  What determines where people travel and how?  Do traditional cultures benefit or suffer when outsiders visit?  Case studies explore the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsumani, South African tourism, an international hotel chain and Austrailia's Uluru.

The Fashion Industry demonstrates the complex weave of issues that underlie our clothes. What are the costs of an outfit on an economic, social and environmental scale?  How do styles and trends spread around the world?  Who are the winners and losers in the global fashion industry?  Case studeis explore the making of a cotton t-shirt, accessories, footwear and alternative fash

ion.
